Shou Sugi Ban Collection

Shou Sugi Ban is a traditional Japanese technique for preserving wood.

At Elesco, we’ve adapted this method to create a unique flooring collection.

The process begins by burning the oak planks, followed by heavy brushing to highlight the grain.

We then give the boards a light sanding to prepare them for finishing. This technique creates a rich, distinctive base color.

The boards are finished with a variety of hard wax oils to enhance their appearance, with multiple clear coats applied for added protection.

Some shades, like Mito and Sakata, maintain the natural burnt oak look, while others, such as Sendai and Otsu, incorporate colored oils for a different effect. Nagano and Osaka feature partially burnt boards, showcasing a blend of burnt and natural oak.

Details

We recommend using rustic grade planks for this finish because the Shou Sugi Ban process enhances the natural character and imperfections of the wood.

The knots, grain variations, and texture in rustic grade planks provide a more striking and authentic appearance, which complements the unique, charred finish of the Shou Sugi Ban technique.

We offer the Shou Sugi Ban technique on any of our premium base products from the Unfinished  Cathedral, Riva, Space, and Trend collections, elevating their aesthetic to a new level of sophistication.
