How to Look After Your Elesco Wood Flooring: A Complete Guide

A Complete Guide

Taking care of your Elesco wood flooring is both simple and rewarding.

With just a little regular maintenance, your floor will stay stunning for years to come.

Here’s everything you need to know about keeping your Elesco floor in top condition.

Installation and Preventive Maintenance

To give your floor the best chance of remaining pristine, follow these steps during and right after installation:

  1. Final Step of Installation: Ensure that the flooring is installed as one of the last steps of your project to avoid potential damage from other trades.

  2. Breathable Protection: If other work is still ongoing, cover the floor with breathable protection to prevent damage. Be sure to turn off the underfloor heating if the floor is covered.

  3. Use Door Mats: Place door mats at all external entrances to catch dirt and grit before it makes its way onto the floor.

  4. Furniture Protection: Apply felt pads to the legs of furniture to prevent scratches and scuffs.

  5. Clean Spills Immediately: Wipe up any spilled liquids immediately to avoid staining or water damage.

Post-Installation Care

Once the floor has been installed, the finish needs time to fully cure—this can take up to 10 days. During this time:

  • Avoid any wet cleaning methods.

  • Stick to dry cleaning with a broom or vacuum.

To protect your floor even further, Elesco recommends applying a coat of maintenance oil after cleaning the floor with a natural soap. This will help seal any gaps between the boards and offer an extra layer of protection.

Ongoing Maintenance

Routine care is key to keeping your Elesco floor looking its best. Here’s what you should do:

  • Dry Cleaning: Sweep or vacuum your floor weekly to remove dirt and grit that could wear down the surface.

  • Wet Cleaning: When mopping, use a natural floor soap like Blanchon Natural Soap or Saicos Wash care. For best results, we recommend using the Elesco Maintenance Kit, which includes everything you need:

a Bona spray mop, applicator mop, spare applicator pad, additional cleaner and maintenance oil.

Annual Maintenance (depending on the level of traffic)

To maintain the protective finish and keep your floor looking its best, apply a coat of maintenance oil once a year. This will refresh the protective layer and extend the life of the floor.

Things to Avoid

To avoid damaging your Elesco floor, follow these important guidelines:

  • Don’t use strong chemicals like washing-up liquid, sugar soap, or abrasive cleaners.

  • Avoid steam cleaners and minimize the amount of water used during mopping.

  • Never clean the floor with scouring pads or abrasive tools—stick to soft pads only.

  • Avoid sticking adhesive tape to the flooring, as it could leave residue or damage the finish.

Maintaining Ideal Environmental Conditions

Wood is a hygroscopic material, meaning it absorbs moisture. Maintaining the right environment is crucial to keeping your flooring in top condition:

  • Relative Humidity: Keep the humidity levels in your home between 45% and 65%.

  • Underfloor Heating: If you have underfloor heating, ensure it does not exceed 27°C underneath the boards to prevent damage.
